This index can be used to find manuscripts and documents that refer to a specific location.  The reference may be in the actual document, manuscript or letter itself, or it may be contained in the background information.  Researchers with interests in particular localities should check surrounding areas and should also consider that boundary changes may affect how a particular item is indexed.

HOW PLACES ARE INDEXED:  Places are indexed first by STATE and then by County within the state.  Placenames are alphabetical within county.  US locations precede non-US locations.  Locations that are not assigned to a specific county appear alphabetically directly below the STATE name.
