Item Number: DM4095 The Surety Bond: Surety bond dated 6 March 1827 at Bristol, Addison County Vermont, signed and sealed by A[masa] Atwood, Winter H. Holley and Edward Sweet. The document binds the signers to the town selectmen Solomon Drake, Henry Soper and Philetus Pier in the amount of $1,000.00 conditional on Atwood’s faithful execution of his duties as first constable and collector for Bristol. Abraham Gaige is also named in the text as a bondsman but did not sign. The signatures of the two witnesses Calvin Newcomb and Erastus S. Hinman are on the lower left. Size: 12 3/4" high x 7 3/4" wide. A small hole at the intersection of two folds, otherwise very nice condition. Background Information: Most of the individuals named in this document played multiple roles in the early history of Bristol. For example, Winter Holley was town clerk from 1826 to 1831, was the proprietor of a store, and served as Bristol’s postmaster. His father Robert was one of the town’s original settlers. Edward Sweet (ca. 1792 – 1851), who married Sylvia Crane on 10 September 1815, served as captain of the Bristol Militia. Henry Soper (1765 – 1844) served as selectman, town clerk and justice of the peace and also operated a grist mill. Abraham Gaige (1776 – 1853) ran the town tavern and Philetus Pier was justice of the peace. Amasa Atwood was town constable in 1827 and 1828. Munsill’s “History” of Bristol noted that “Capt. Amasa Atwood” died on July 20, 1828.
