Item Number: DM4094 The Bond: Josiah Thrasher (1763 – 1849) was born in Maryland and moved to Pendleton County, Kentucky with his wife Nancy Bonar sometime before 1799 when he appears as a road surveyor in the county minute books. The father of six children (John, William, Aaron, Sarah, James and Stephen), Josiah Thrasher moved to Rush County, Indiana sometime between 1823 and 1825. His strong signature appears on the bottom of this early document as surety for Ambrose Clark, who is to serve as constable for Pendleton County in 1804 and whose signature appears below Thrasher’s. The document is recorded in Pendleton County’s Minute Book “A”. Size: 13 1/2" high x 8 1/4" wide. Moderate age-toning and tenderness at folds, with a few separations and small holes. Would make a nice display piece. Background Information: Ambrose Clark appears in the 1810 census of Pendleton County, his name not far from Thrasher’s. Clark also appears with Thrasher as a purchaser at an estate sale in Pendleton County at around the same time. The state of Kentucky still requires constables to post similar bonds. Now, the minimum amount is $10,000.00. An excellent example of an early legal artifact from early Kentucky, executed just 12 years after statehood.
