The Certificate:

1838 certificate of appointment of Daniel P. Adams as Justice of the Peace for Chittenden County, Vermont. The certificate, dated 3 October 1838, contains the seal of the state in the lower left hand corner and is signed by Governor Silas H. Jenison on the right and by Secretary Geo[rge] B. Mansur on the left.  On the reverse,  Adams has executed and signed his oath of office, which is witnessed by Charles Russell, justice of the peace. This is dated 29 January 1839.

Except for 3 small holes in the to left-hand corner, the certificate is in excellent condition. Size: 13" wide x 8" high.

Background Information: Silas Hemenway Jenison was the first native Vermonter to serve as governor of the state.  He was born in Shoreham on May 17, 1791and was a surveyor before entering public life.  He was a member of the Vermont General Assembly from 1829 to 1835, Lieutenant Governor in 1834 – 1835 and Governor from 1835  to 1841.  After his term as Governor, he declined re-nomination.  He later served as Judge of probate from 1841 until 1847.  Jenison died on 30 October 1849.

George B. Mansur, D.D. was a Williston lawyer who became Secretary to the Governor and Council in 1832.  He served until 1836, at which time he became the Secretary of Civil and Military Affairs until 1841.  Mansur also edited a temperance newspaper and in 1850, became the rector of St. Peter’s Church in Bennington, where he served until his death on 17 November 1862.
