Item Number: Dm4062 The Writ: Writ of execution from Bristol County, Massachusetts dated 1829, against Zeno Buck. 8 3/8” X 8 ¼”, with paper seal and an attached note 2 ¾” X 7 ¼”. A few minor separations at folds, otherwise very good. Writ of execution issued to the Sheriff of the County of Bristol, dated 11 March 1829, against the goods or estate of Zeno Buck, of Easton, in the County of Bristol, laborer, to satisfy a debt he owed to Amos Lincoln, laborer, of Norton, Bristol County. Buck failed to repay a note for 8 dollars that he gave to Lincoln in October of 1824. The note is attached to the writ with sealing wax. Buck is ordered to appear before James Ellis, at his dwellinghouse in Taunton at 10 AM on Saturday, March 28th. The writ is signed by Ellis. There is also a signed statement on the reverse of the writ dated March 17th 1829 that reads, “…By virtue of the within writ I attached a chain the property of the within named Zeno Buck and at the same time left a summons at his last and usual place of abode for his appearance at court Sam Wilbur”. The court docketing also notes “Settled not entered Pltf paid me my fees Sheriff his fees” The fees were $1.00 for the writ and .75 to the sheriff to serve it. Background Information: The defendant Zeno Buck was born circa 1793 and died in 1868. His first wife was Susan Pendergast. The plaintiff is likely the same Amos Lincoln who married Silence Eddy. Justice James Ellis also served as District Attorney of Bristol County.
