The Marriage Permission: Manuscript marriage permission slip, dated September 3, 1850, from Samuel L. Potts, addressed to “Samuel McCormick, Esq., Cadiz, Harr. Co. Ohio”. There is a small hole where the note was originally sealed with wax, affecting part of the word “to” above the signature. Size: 5 1/2” high x 7 7/8”wide. Background Information: Samuel L. Potts, a 47 year old tavern keeper in Jefferson (now called German Twp), Harrison County Ohio is found in the 1850 census on the 25th of July with his 51 year old wife Elizabeth, their children (Jonathan, 22, Elizabeth, 20, Dilla Ann, 19, and William, 14) and other family members including Thomas Barnes, age 75, and Nancy Barnes, age 67, the parents of his wife. Also in the household are: Martha A. Ryan, age 17 and A.W. Guthrie, a 28 year old dentist from Harrison County, Ohio. Several months later, on the 3rd of September, 1850, Samuel Potts sent a marriage permission note to the county clerk, Samuel McCormick, saying “This is to inform you that if A.W. Guthries call on you for licens to git married to Elizabeth Potts a daughter of mine she is old anuff to chuse for her self and that is a privlage we all aught to have yours with respect Samuel L. Potts” The happy news is that Elizabeth Potts apparently eventually availed herself of the privilege her father offered her, selected the boarder-dentist Alexander W. Guthrie, married him in 1854 and was the mother of 4 children.
