Background Information: George Harbaugh (1827 -1902) was the son of Solomon Harbaugh and Margaret Miller. Solomon Harbaugh migrated from Maryland to Indiana sometime in the 1820s and bought land in Harrison County by 1836. In addition to George, Solomon Harbaugh’s family included sons William, Charles and Peter and daughters Lydia and Margaret. Lydia married Isaac Lofton in 1865 and Margaret Ella married John Routh.

At the time of her marriage to George Harbaugh, Mary (Inman) Nantz was a widow.  We find her in the 1860 Harrison County Indiana census married to farmer George Nantz.  Also in the household is her younger sister, 13 year old Lucretia Inman.  In 1900, we find George and Mary Harbaugh in West Point, Hardin County Kentucky.  Also in the household is George’s unmarried sister-in-law “Lou Inman”, aged 52.

The minister, Byram Carter, appears in the 1860 Jackson County Indiana census in Houston, Salt Creek Township.  He is listed as being 31 years of age and a “clergyman Meth.”.  Also listed are “Hannah E.” aged 20, and “Elmira F." aged 9 months. In 1870, he is in Franklin Township, Harrison County, aged 41, living with his second wife “Ruth”.  Here he is described as “Methodist preacher”.  In 1900 he is in Greencastle, Putnam County Indiana, aged 71.  The census shows that he was born in August of 1828 and has been married to “Ruth A.” for 36 years.  He is listed as a clergyman and the census shows that his father and mother were born in North Carolina and South Carolina, respectively.  Ruth’s parents were born in Virginia.  In 1910, both Byram Carter and his wife Ruth were living in Indianapolis in the household of their daughter Grace, wife of real estate agent Edgar L. Davis, along with the Davis children, Herschel and Julian.
