Item Number: DM4010 The Document: Mayor’s Court document, signed by Jacob Delamontagne, and dated 21st May 1799. Bail document for Joseph Watson in the plea of trespass of John Cox and William Edgar vs. Watson. Other names in the document are James Watson and John Chapman. The bold signature of New York City Alderman Jacob Delamontagne is affixed to the bottom of the document. Delamontagne, who lived with his wife in the west ward of Manhattan, was a fixture in New York City public life for many years. Size: 5 5/8" high x 8" wide. In excellent condition. Background Information: In June, 1665, the court of Burgomasters and Schepens was abolished in the City of New York and replaced by a new court called the Mayor's Court. The Mayor’s Court handled civil suits, apprenticeship litigation, naturalizations and other similar matters handled today by a small claims court.
