Item Number: DM4009 The Bill of Lading: Partially printed bill of lading, for goods shipped by Peter Boyer from Havana to Stephen Dutilth of Philadelphia, dated 1 August 1798. The ornamental letter “S” at the head of the bill contains a small ship vignette. Size: 5" high x 10" wide. Closely cropped at top and bottom, affecting some of the letters; a handsome piece overall. The bill is signed, with exceptions noted, by Anthony Desverneys, Master of the ship “Fabius”. The cargo is 299 boxes of sugar, 97 hides, 10 barrels and three hogsheads* of coffee and a quintal of logwood**. The rates for shipping are described as “ sugar @ four dollars a box[and] the rest as customary”. Desverneys notes that “the boxes of sugar are in bad order, the hides damaged by the worms and the weight of the logwood unknown.” Background Information: The receiving merchant Stephen Dutilth and his family appear in the New Market Ward of Philadelphia in the1800 census. The name “Dutilth” also appears in records as “Dutith” and Dutilh”.
* A hogshead is a measure equal to 63 gallons. ** Logwood comes from the heartwood of a Central American tree and is used to make violet, blue or grey dye. It would have been shipped as shavings or chips. A quintal is a hundredweight or 100 pounds.
