Item Number: DM4003 The Certificate: Certificate licensing Miss Julia M. Stone as a teacher of the “first grade” to teach for three years in the First School District of Onondaga County, New York, dated 19 November 1867. The pre-printed (4" x 8") certificate is signed by Joseph O. Wright as School Commissioner. Wright was an Onondaga county attorney as well as school commissioner. The certificate states that she has been examined in respect to “moral character, learning and ability” and that her “experience and devotion to the profession” entitle her to the license. Some spotting, but in overall very good condition. Background Information: In 1860, Julia Stone, then aged 20, was living at home with her parents Oliver and Phoebe Stone and her 30 year old brother Oliver in the Town of Lysander, Onondaga County. She was still at home in Baldwinsville NY with her widowed mother in 1870.
