The Book: Reading Early American Handwriting, by Kip Sperry. Published by the Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, 2002 (1998). Biblio., illus., 4to., softcovers, 289 pp.

Description of the contents:  This book teaches how to read and understand the handwriting found in documents commonly used in genealogical research.  It explains techniques for reading early American documents; provides samples of alphabets and sample letter forms; defines terms and abbreviations commonly used in early American documents such as wills, deeds, and church records; and, furthermore, presents numerous examples of early American records for the researcher to work with. The documents - nearly one hundred of them at various stages of complexity - appear with the author's transcriptions on a facing page, enabling the reader to check his own transcriptions. New.
