John Fontaine was a British Army Officer whose father, a French refugee, had settled first in Devonshire and later in Ireland. Fontaine's journal was written during three trips to Virginia and one to New York City. The journal contains numerous references to early settlers in Virginia and New York that Fontaine met on his travels. Includes a chapter on the Fontaine genealogy.
